What we don’t use – Fola Daniel Adelesi

We find it easy to tell people how insignificant what we have are or how infinitesimal they are. We always talk about the negligible status of the things that we carry and desperately yearn for the possession of another thing while still carrying the one we call insignificant. No matter how insignificant or useless what we carry seems to be we need to understand that it is still what we really need to get started in life and it is not what we do not have that has gotten us stuck where we are. It is what we have that we are not using.

You can easily find people talking about the car they don’t have, the shoes they have not bought, the clothes they are still looking forward to, they kind of meals they would like to have, the kind of houses they would love to live in, the kind of people they would love to meet and the kind of places where they want to be seen. It’s not that office space that you do not have that is stopping you from starting the business. It is your mind that is stopping you from starting the business. It is not the money you don’t have that will not let you get anything started. It is the small ability in you that you have not put to use that has not allowed the money that you need to come around.

What we need to do is to start something with the little that already exists and see how much more we can access when the little is put to use. There is a principle that guides this and you can call it the law of use. I want to call it the law of use for some reasons. First it is what you use that lets people know what you do. What they see you do is what they will come and pay you for. What people are paying you for is what will be enlarged in your hands and then you can use the resources that have come in as a result of the use of the first one you had to go after the things that you thought you need. Certain people should also know what you have and this will help you understand why a widow in the Bible couldn’t get help until she mentioned what she had. There are people we will meet in our lives who will be in a position to spark off something that will be an explosive experience but that experience will only depend on what we tell them that we have.

When I started out in Public Speaking I didn’t know so much about entrepreneurship and I think that helped me in a way. If I had know something about business I probably would have started out thinking about money to rent an office space and materials to work with but I didn’t. I jokingly said to people, ‘my head is my head office and my room is my branch because that is where my computer is.’ In other words I had the mindset that pushed me away from focusing on the things I did not have at that time and worked with only my computer and my mouth. After using my computer and my mouth so well the other things I needed began to surface. Today I have published books, been on radio and consistently appear on television. The resultant effect from that is having people who have watched the TV broadcasts calling me to request my services but let’s note that I started with the seemingly insignificant which helped me to get the significant thing I still looked forward to.

So many of us have to begin to scrutinize the multiplier effects in the seemingly tiny seeds that we carry in our hands can produce if only we put them to use. In some cases what we have may truly be what someone else needs and that person also has what we need. What should be done is to let people know what we have so that we can use it as a leverage to get what we want. For years I can tell you from experience that there are people I have wanted to do business with but the reason I couldn’t do business with them is that I don’t really know what they do. For some it can be embarrassing to ask them what they do especially if there is nothing in the tone of the conversation that will lead to a business discussion and you do not want to embarrass them. When people do not talk about what they do simply because they think it is not good enough they are constantly short changing themselves and closing up doors of opportunities right in front of them.

Sometimes you just cannot tell who’s standing next to you and if you will succeed with the little that you have first you must believe that whatever you start with the little can yield and if only you will do something there will be a greater result which you can them use to get more and more until you get to the level of abundance. This is a statement consequent upon the fact that even a tree stump and the scent of water can still live again. Your action is the only lever that your ability needs to get you the results that you desire.

Whatever it is that you have must be worked on because the only way to have more is to start something with what you already have. You cannot afford to do nothing while waiting for what you do not have because when what you desire comes around it is your previous work that will qualify you for it. That relates to how the labour market also works. If you say you don’t have a job and you do nothing because you don’t have a job you need to know that your doing nothing will affect you when you eventually get an opportunity. One of the questions they will ask you is ‘what have you been doing since you left school or since you quit your last job?’

You have all you need to get started even if you don’t have all you need to finish it.

The key issues here therefore are:

1.) What you don’t have is not the problem but what you have that you do not put to use.
2.) No matter how small your resource or ability is it needs you to believe in it.
3.) Nothing bigger will come until you use the small one that you have.
4.) Let people know what you have and what you do so that they know where to come in.
5.) You can only get recommendations for the things that you publicise.
6.) You cannot afford to do nothing while waiting for what you don’t have because you do not qualify for more when you have not started anything.

Don’t let this waiting kill me – Fola Daniel Adelesi

It’s hard to wait but I know if this waiting does not kill you and I then it’s going to make us. The waiting can put us into situations where we begin to wonder if we ever understood the meaning of hope. Sometimes it just looks like we are not going to survive the next minute if we don’t get what we want but then the minutes drag on into hours and into days and into weeks and then finally it turns into years for some people. deep down on the inside of us we really want to ask God what’s happening but we have been told not to question the authority of God because God really is the unquestionable God so we seat down and groan. I understand that God is unquestionable but He did say, ‘come and let us reason together.’

I honestly think it’s pretty hard to reason with God about why you have to wait so long for a job when it’s obvious you are hungry and you need shelter. You are being accommodated by someone else or better still let’s use the word tolerated and you still have to wait in that same place where you are being tolerated. You have been waiting so long for a spouse to come along or for a child to come around but nothing seem to be coming. You said you were self-employed but the cash flow isn’t flowing so everybody told you to get a job and when you decided to get one the interviewer is asking you, ‘why are you looking for a job?’ This meant that they saw a potential for an employer in you and not that of an employee but the big jobs that can feed you regularly and leave some stipends in your accounts are just not coming and for that moment you can’t even think about employing others otherwise you would be employing trouble.

Sometimes we want to understand why certain things are happening and at other times we just don’t have enough strength to seat through another sermon on why the things that are not happening are for our good. We just want a situation where all of the emotions can be turned around in split seconds via the sudden provision of what we have been expecting. At this point we begin to realize that long suffering really means suffering long and not just a combination of words to fill up space in the Holy Book.

God makes a promise to us and then we feel like when we wake up tomorrow the promise is going to be there, not in words but in the forms that we pictured when the words came. For a moment we get so excited just because we have the promise – a posted dated financial instrument – and when the excitement can no longer sustain us we begin to drag into anxiety. Yes we have the promise but we are not just keen on the promise right now because we have already told everyone about the promise so they are also waiting with us to see the promise. Sometimes it gets really complicated that we want the promise not just because it was for us but because we have told others about it and we don’t want to look like liars. We are beginning to get into situations where we want God to prove that He spoke to us about something and when the people believe God spoke we also want God to defend himself. Unfortunately God does not come in a hurry simply because of the people we have shared his promise with since He does not have to defend the integrity of His word before men.

While we think that God should hurry either because we need something desperately or because we think people should see what God can do, God thinks we should just wait for THE APPOINTED time because He makes all things beautiful in its time. Then God says those that “wait” will in the process of waiting renew their strength. The aftermath of waiting will be that they will mount up with wings as eagles. In the middle of all of this we really want to believe God then we remember that He is Jehovah Jireh.

We live in nations where some seem to over all the money and others seem to have all the troubles yet they are fellow citizens. It sometimes looks like some just have it as soon as they snap a finger but others have to wait for a baby to grow.

I can’t contend the promises or the capacity of God but I just want to say, ‘God, don’t let this waiting kill me.’ It is possible for some people to wait for something for so long such that they would have lost the essence of waiting by the time the waiting is over. I don’t know about you but I guess you are so spiritual that waiting is a natural thing for you. As for me I think the only reason waiting seems natural is because the only thing I have to do is to wait. If truth must be told many of us are waiting because we don’t seem to have alternatives and we really can’t help ourselves. Deep down on the inside we claim to be waiting but we are also checking out the possibilities of alternatives. We are human beings and we live within time and when God makes a promise to us our constraint of time makes us desperate enough to forget that the maker of the promise created time but does not live within time.

As for me I don’t know how long I have to wait an even if I say I can’t wait for this to be over I will still have to wait for it to be over. So in all of these I just want to say dear God:

1.) Don’t let this waiting kill me
2.) Don’t let it quench my faith
3.) I don’t want to wait so long and then forget the essence of waiting
4.) When the waiting is over help me to quickly say you did it so that I would not be punished with another waiting over something that can come in a jiffy.
5.) Don’t let the waiting present me as a superstar but as a message from God in everybody’s mail box
6.) When the waiting is over let me enjoy the reason for which I waited.
7.) This is hard but I have to say take me through the next waiting that will take me through to the next level.

Oratory is not my intention in this piece so you can excuse my repetition. It’s hard to wait but God, don’t let this waiting kill me.

Squandered passion - Fola Daniel Adelesi
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

There are so many people who have the potential to succeed at everything they do but they end up not succeeding as much as they want to or not succeeding at all simply because of squandered or misguided passion.
In my few years of teaching business, motivation and leadership, close to ten (10) years, at the time I sat to write this piece, I have seen so many people, some of them younger than I am and some of them older than I am, who have dreams and really want to achieve their dreams. They do not only have the dreams they are working on they also have the passion to accomplish the dream but as soon as they begin to talk you can tell that they have a misguided passion that they will squander sooner than the whole work begins. When you have projects on your hands it is important to be happy about those projects and it is necessary to talk about the project passionately because you should be informed that there are times when people buy into your passion before buying into your vision. What’s the essence of having a vision that does not convey your passion?
Despite the need for people to sometimes buy into your passion before buying into your vision it should also be noted that that passion could also be a reason for them not to buy into it when the passion seems to be overblown. When you talk you have to ensure that your passion is not separated from reasoning. Your passion should be amusing but not confusing. Your passion should convey your depth of knowledge about the project you are working on and your willingness to start. Your passion should potentially help people in the interpretation of your commitment to the work. When you passion leaves people wondering if you are a realistic person then you are beginning to squander the passion because it is already working against you rather than working for you.
When you talk passionate you are not allowed to leave out details and the relevant logic need to convey a message. You should also put to consideration if what you are passionate about at the moment will be useful to you. I have seen a lot of young men argue passionately about the career of other people who do not even know anyone is talking about them. I have seen young men argue passionately about football, footballers, football clubs and the fortune that the footballers will never share with them if they argue from now till eternity.
Unfortunately some have gone as far as fighting each other and sustaining injuries over what is not going to bring a penny into their pockets because they want to make a point. Whatever point you have to make without any positive impact on the listener or the speaker is in the first place not a necessary point and you may end up being hurt when your point is not accepted. At the end of the show you become hurt because it seemed as if your passion was not strong enough to win the opponent over.
Stop squandering your passion on projects that have a lot of activities but does not have one thing you can point to as the productive result you have from it! You need your passion for more important things than arguing about people who do not know you and will never share their money with you except you have something to offer. Refocus your passion by checking yourself to make sure that everything you are passionate about is a positive thing and in a way directly affects the life of the listener and you.

It begins with you

There is a very interesting advert that I have heard for several months on radio and seen television. I have also seen it on newspapers and web sites of organizations and the closing words of that advert is, “imagine the possibility of an HIV/AIDS free generation, it begins with you.” If this is true, then I want to inform the Nigerian youths to Imagine the possibility of a lawless Nigeria, it begins with you! Imagine the possibility of a beautiful Nigeria, it begins with you! Imagine the possibility of a progressive Nigeria, it begins with you. Imagine the possibility of a corruption free Nigeria, it begins with you. Imagine the possibility of excellent academic environment, it begins with you. Imagine the possibility of smooth traffic in Nigeria, it begins with you. If all is going to be well in Nigeria, it begins with you. If we would have a nation that upholds the truth, it begins with you. If we are going to follow due process, it begins with you. If we are going to have less of cheats parading themselves as religious leaders, it begins with you. Imagine the possibility of a Nigeria admired by all nations, It begins with you. Imagine the possibility of NIGERIA VISA LOTTERY, it begins with you. Imagine the possibility of millions stranded at the airport because they want to see the nation called Nigeria, it begins with you. Imagine a Senate house that is interested in the people it represents, it begins with you. Imagine the emergence of true representation in political offices, it begins with you. Imagine the possibility of compassionate leadership instead of subjecting citizens to servitude, it begins with you. The possibility of an atmosphere permeated by love is hanging on the fact that it begins with you. Imagine with possibility of a secured Nigeria where the response of the Nigerian force will not create a comic scene, it begins with you. Imagine a setting where it is impossible for any “sacred cows” to steal in our national pause without be adequately dealt with, it begins with you. A civil service set up with zero tolerance for corruption and nonchalance on government issues is suspended on the truth that it begins with you. Imagine when this nation will change, it begins with you. Imagine how this nation will change, it begins with you. Imagine why this nation will change, it begins with you. Imagine who is the most appropriate person to start the change, it begins with you. Imagine how the change begins, it begins with you. Because I do not want to be selfish my last words in this article will be that it truly begins with “you” – that you is you and I.

May 23

MAY 23, 2007

If you cannot remember where you were born,
If you cannot remember how you were born,
If you cannot remember to whom you were born,
Do not fail to find out why you were born.

Fola Daniel Adelesi

On the 23rd of May, some years back, a young man was born in a community called Agiliti, which is located in Lagos just behind the popular Mile 12 market after Ketu.

According to the information made available, he was the first baby boy to be born in that community, which according to royal rights places him in a position to lead the community if the community were the type that is interested in a monarchial rule.

Like every other young man he played football on the streets and did ride bicycle before his priorities began to change. He grew up as a talkative but quietly became more reserved and talked only when necessary.

Playing, for him, was a priority but as time rolled by a new phase of his life unfolded and he began to redirect his energy into the world of information simply to be able to live a better life and help others live better lives.

Hear from him

“May 23, the day I was born, is a day that keeps ringing in my heart, not because I look forward to it as a man who is growing older but as a man who was sent to this earth to help others achieve what they want to achieve.

I grew up thinking about myself but now I am consumed with a passion to help others live a better life and help them to add value to themselves. I have such a great task ahead of me to help you become who you want to be in life and May 23 stands like a mock judgment day when I must ask myself how many lives I have impacted and how many I am helping. Why should people remember when they were born and forget why they were born?

For me it’s too early to give up because I shall be held responsible for some lives. I can’t watch these lives live in a miserable manner when there is “abundance inside of them”

I find true happiness when the people I’m sent to also have true happiness so I seize this opportunity to ask people who still remember their birthdays to make it a special day when they review their success in the assignment God gave them.”

Fola Daniel Adelesi.

That man that was born on May 23rd is Fola Daniel Addelesi. If you would take a word from me I would say celebrate birthdays only when you are sure you have started God’s assignment for you because birthday reminds you of the day he sent you to this earth.
